CompuServe QuickPads By Ted Finch Revised 6/2/94 INTRODUCTION These QuickPad navigators allow you to easily move around the CompuServe service--they are very functional and I use them often. I created them within the Crosstalk QuickPad editor that ships with Crosstalk using the CASL scripting language. They are not a DCA product and are not supported by DCA. Feel free to open them up in the QuickPad editor and see how they work. Once you see what can be done with QuickPads, and some very basic scripting, you will see why there are so many Crosstalk converts... no other comm program out there allows this kind of personalization. All QuickPads were made at 640x480 resolution--they will work at higher res but I haven't tried it. They may just not load on top of each other as expected since all of the windows use an undocumented feature that loads the QuickPads at set locations on the screen. They also contain pointers that expect to find a file (usually a text file) in the directory where I created them (c:\windows\xtalk20\xwp20). If you used the default Crosstalk location (c:\xtalk20...) instead of the path I used then you may get a few errors (the notepad or mswrite program will open a blank screen instead of pulling up the associated file). You can either edit the QuickPad and change the path or move your Crosstalk files to a subdirectory of Windows and they should work flawlessly. The end of this file contains the names of the QuickPads that have paths associated with them. INSTALLATION All applicable QuickPads should be found in this zipped file "CSMENU.zip". Uncompress the files and then copy them all into the .../xtalk/xwp20 sub directory. They all begin with "CS*.*" so you can later find them and delete them if desired (don't delete the CSERVE*.* file though since it contains your origional log-in script). There should be apx. 51 QuickPads. Open Crosstalk and select the CServe session or Setup CompuServe if you've never used CompuServe yet. The program should load a small default QuickPad and allow you to dial. Cancel the dialing. Now, from within Crosstalk select the menu item QUICKPAD/LOAD and then load up the file "CSMAIN". This is the main CompuServe menu. You may wish to close the small CompuServe QuickPad that comes with Crosstalk since it's options are duplicated and it doesn't do as much anyway. You are now ready to use the QuickPads. HOW TO USE With the main menu on the screen and the line disconnected you can click around and notice that several buttons require you to be on-line first-- except the JUMP button which launches a subdirectory. Click on EXIT to return to the main menu. If you click on the "?" ICON you will get on-line help. Please read and advance through each section to learn the features and conventions. It should only take you a few minutes. Remember, all ICONS either load a submenu or shrink the existing menu. The EXIT icon will close the menu and usually returns you to the main menu. Always use the EXIT icon rather than manually closing the window (from the left corner). Otherwise you will have to manually re-load the main QuickPad rather than having it re-loaded for you. Please see the on-line help for further instructions. PATHS FOR EDITING QUICKPADS First, to edit a QuickPad you can either click on the QuickPads left corner and select EDIT (the easiest way) or you can select FILE/NEW/QuickPad and then open a QuickPad from within a subdirectory. Once the QuickPad is in the graphical editor you will have to double click on the buttons or Icons that I list to edit the contents. All but the Crosstalk LITE versions (that come free with your machine) include the QuickPad editor. If not then it is well worth it to contact DCA and upgrade to the full version for the modest $49). Following are the names and locations of the QuickPads that contain paths: QUICKPAD NAME LOCATION (all directions start from the main menu) More Help To access this QuickPad click on the "?" icon and then click on the "More Help" button. Edit the COMPUSERVE button and change the path in the script location. Crosstalk Menu Help To access this QuickPad click on the "?" icon and then click on the "More Help" button. From this MORE HELP QuickPad click on Crosstalk Help. The QuickPad that loads shows a graphical representation of the Crosstalk icons. Edit this QuickPad. While in the editor double click on the MORE HELP button and change the path. Reference From the main menu, click on the "book" icon above the REFER button. Edit this QuickPad and double click on the "My ScratchPad" button and change the path. Utility Menu On the main menu click on the Utilities button. Edit the Utility Menu QuickPad. You will change the paths of the "Create Mail", "Address Book" and "Find a Forum" buttons. That should be all of them. Have fun and I hope these QuickPads help you to better navigate CompuServe. You may wish to add other options of your own choosing once you see how easy it is to create and edit Crosstalk QuickPads. FUTURE To eliminate the hard path codes I will add a "GETHOME" CASL command in my scripts--it eliminates the need for a total path. I just learned this from one of the programers who looked the files over. I would like to encourage you to enhance these QuickPads and pass them around. There are some interesting scripts under the Utilities menu that start automatic uploads and launch an address book for E-Mail messages but they are not yet bullet proof. The scripts should check to see if you are in the right location before attempting to work. I didn't fuss with it since they work great for me but I'd like to see them improved. I did, however, create extra help screens to explain how to use them as they are. So far, the "upload," "download" and "attach..." icons don't do anything, but they will as soon as I get around to it. Also, if anyone else has some hot scripts that do neat things in CompuServe or other services, including the Internet, I would love to see them. I've also got more Internet QuickPads that I'll be uploading soon. Please feel free to contact me at 404-442-4077 if you have any great suggestions or have new scripts to ad. You can also reach me on the Internet at "tedfinch@netcom.com". Please don't send me mail on my CompuServe number since it is a shared company number and I usually don't get the mail. Happy info surfing. Ted Finch
